Abdul Kalam Scholarship Launched To Mark The Late President’s Death Anniversary

Fondly recalled as the People’s President for his presidential term between 2002 to 2007, or the Missile Man for his contribution to India’s nuclear program, Late APJ Abdul Kalam was one of the foremost scientists of modern India. On the occasion of his third death anniversary, the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Centre organized the Kalam Liveable Planet Conclave, here in the capital. As part of the announcements made on the occasion a new Abdul Kalam Scholarship was also launched.

This Abdul Kalam Scholarship will be a 12-month Fellowship program, including a 2-month training and orientation period. The scholarship is open to graduate candidates below the age of 35 years. The aim of the scholarship is to provide the youth of the country with an opportunity for personal transformation through self-discovery.

This is the latest among many such other scholarship schemes named after the late Bharat Ratna awardee. Among other important scholarships that are named after the former president are:

1.    Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship

This scholarship is organized by the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) to find and reward outstanding engineers in India. The aim of the scholarship is to encourage, support and recognize translational research and achieve excellence in innovation, engineering and technology development. Along with a regular income, the Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of INR 25,000 and a research grant of INR 15 Lakh per annum.

2.    Dr A P J Abdul Kalam IGNITE Awards

This scholarship is for all students up to Class 12. The objective of this initiative is to promote and utilize the creative and innovative ideas/innovations/projects of the students. Selected students are invited to Ahmedabad and their projects are displayed in exhibition.

3.    Fulbright Kalam Climate Fellowship

This fellowship is organized by United States‐India Educational Foundation(USIEF). The scholarship is open to candidates pursuing a PhD, or those who’ve completed a PhD, with research work in the identification of resources in India and the U.S. Under this program, selected fellows receive visa support, round-trip economy class air travel between India and the U.S., a monthly stipend, insurance, settling-in allowance, and a professional allowance.

4.    President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Postgraduate Fellowship

The President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Postgraduate Fellowship is offered by the University of South Florida (USF) in honour of the Indian ex-president. Students who have or will be graduating from an Indian University, and are willing to pursue a PhD degree at University of South Wales, are eligible for this scholarship. Selected candidates will receive a full tuition fee waiver for up to 4 years, as well as a monthly stipend of USD 2000 for 9 months a year, for up to 4 years.
